About Gina Dermody

Clinical Director of AdolEssence and Beyond

Adolescent, Young Adult & Family Psychotherapist

gina

Starting life as a qualified social worker Gina spent over 15 years working within the many areas of  community and hospital social work before training as a psychotherapist. Gina has a very good understanding of the many complex challenges which face parents, teenagers and individuals in navigating development and young adulthood. Gina's extensive qualifications in the  area of bereavement, family therapy, yoga, mindfulness, trauma and adolescent psychotherapy means that her approach is authentic and grounded in both experience and learning.

Gina is understanding and passionate about her work with adolescents, families and young adults. She brings a caring and mindful approach which is focused on supporting people to become who they really need to be. Her approach is safe and yet creative offering everyone the opportunity to explore, learn and develop that wonderful sense of self.

Adolescents are amazing human beings. Parents and caregivers are eager to be supportive in this period of development. These two facts do not always work together. Finding your identity can feel risky and exhausting, while supporting an adolescent can feel frustrating and unrewarding. Therapy with adolescents and their families is designed to give greater understanding about this important life stage. Together we support the adolescent in navigating their future adult life

At AdolEssence and Beyond, Gina strives to create a safe, comfortable and non-judgmental environment where you and your family can explore and understand issues. Her goal is to help you and your family to identify and learn new coping strategies, to build on your strengths and to make lasting changes.

Gina's work is influenced and supported by her role as a mum, a believer in all things love and her overall enthusiasm for adventure and fun. Gina's belief is that life while amazing can also be complex and confusing. Her work is to figure stuff out and to try and find the love and connection that makes it all worthwhile.

My Approach

My approach to adolescent and family psychotherapy services is to provide an individualised, collaborative experience tailored to the unique needs of each client. I use a variety of techniques, including talk therapy, sand space therapy, and other creative interventions, to help adolescents and their families gain insight, identify strengths, and explore possible solutions. My goal is to create a safe, supportive environment where clients can feel heard, understood, and empowered to make lasting positive changes in their lives. Compassion is at the core of my work,  changes made from this approach last much longer as  understanding and kindness are the main components of change. Being an adolescent, a parent to one or a young adult can be a struggle sometimes so we figure out a way to make it much easier.
